About Tournament League

Tournament League Purpose

To provide an opportunity for members of First Tee – Greater Pasadena to participate in competitive golf matches as a means to practice and develop the life-skills and core values introduced by coaches, staff, and volunteers.

What is Tournament League?

Tournament League is a program of First Tee – Greater Pasadena. Competitors can participate in up to three seasons a year: spring, summer, and fall.

If your child is learning the game of golf and wondering what’s next, Tournament League is designed as a place where both individual performance and team play are emphasized.

Tournament League competitors must also participate in First Tee Life-Skills Education classes. (Player, Par, Birdie, Eagle, Teen level classes)

What will they learn?

Competitors are responsible for following the rules of golf and keeping an accurate score while also holding their fellow competitors accountable for their play on the golf course.

Each competitor will learn to make decisions for themselves while on the golf course while also learning how play safe and maintain a good pace of play.

We encourage our competitors to practice the life-skills and core values that accompany the game. During a match, core values such as honesty, confidence, sportsmanship, and courtesy are practiced. Competitors also practice life-skills such as: dealing with challenges, staying cool on the course, and developing goals for their golf game.

How does it work?

Each competitor is a member of one of the four teams. Each season, teams will compete for the team championship. Individual scores will also be tabulated and counted toward a season-long race for the individual championship. (See scoring below for more information)

To emphasize scoring from 100 yards and closer, we offer a total of five different sets of tee boxes for competitors. Their tee box selection is based on their drive distance.

Team Play

Teams will earn points for wins and ties and the team with the most points at the end of championship day will be named Team Champion.

We play a total of seven matches during a season. The first six are regular season and the final match is the championship match which is worth more team points.

Individual Play

To earn an individual medal, a competitor must compete in at least four of the six regular season matches and participate in the championship match.

Only their best four regular season scores will be counted heading into championship week.

Their top four regular season scores plus their championship day score will determine our medal earners. We award first, second, and third place individual champions.

Scoring (9-hole Stroke Play format)

Team Play:

The best six competitors’ scores will count toward a team’s total. The winning team in a particular match will be determined by whose best six scores are the lowest in total.

The winning team will earn 3 team points. A tie score will earn 1 team point for each team. Losses earn 0 points.

Team point totals will accumulate during the six regular season matches.

The season-ending championship match points quadruple. Championship match points are as follows:

1st place – 12 points

2nd place – 9 points

3rd place – 6 points

4th place – 3 points.

Team points from the six regular season matches and the championship match are combined to determine our Team Champions for the season.

Individual Play:

Individual scores are tracked throughout the season. A competitor must complete at least four regular season matches to qualify for an individual medal.

Only a competitor’s best four scores to par will count toward their season total.

A competitor’s championship match score will be added to their best four scores from the regular season to determine 3 medalists: gold, silver and bronze winners.

We also honor our most improved player with a medal. This medal is awarded by coaches.

Competitor’s that finish in the top 10 are awarded an exemption from the tryout for the following season and earn an automatic spot on a team roster.

Note: Top 10 finisher exemptions do not carry over more than one season.

Eligibility

As a reminder, the purpose of this league is: To provide an opportunity for members of First Tee – Greater Pasadena to participate in competitive golf matches as a means to practice and develop the life-skills and core values introduced by coaches, staff, and volunteers.

We exist to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.

Each tournament league competitor must also participate in First Tee – Greater Pasadena Life Skills Education classes (Player, Par, Birdie, Teen, Eagle level classes).

To maintain eligibility for the next season of Tournament League, competitors must attend 75% of their Life-Skills Education golf classes (6 of 8 classes). If a competitor does not attend the minimum 75% they will lose their eligibility for Tournament League for two passing seasons. (For example, a competitor competes in spring ‘21 but does not attend 75% of their spring ’21 classes, they will lose eligibility for summer ’21 and fall ’21 seasons and will regain eligibility for Tournament League in spring ’22). If you miss a class, your coach will gladly help you find a make-up class to attend.
